Naomichi ‘Joe’ Ozaki has been appointed to lead Asia for the fifth consecutive time at the next edition of the Royal Trophy – Europe vs Asia Golf Championship.

“Ozaki will captain the Asian Team at the Royal Trophy on 14-16 December 2012 at The Empire Hotel & Country Club in the Sultanate of Brunei,” said Lincoln Venancio, the Royal Trophy Co-Managing Director.

“This will be his fifth consecutive captaincy at the Royal Trophy. He has clearly earned the position with a historic victory over the Europeans in 2009 and by courageously steering Asia through two remarkably competitive contests in 2010 and 2011,” added Lincoln Venancio.

The thirty-five time professional tournament title winner Ozaki suffered a severe defeat in his first appearance at the Royal Trophy in 2007, when he faced the late legendary Severiano Ballesteros as the European captain. However, in his second attempt at the Royal Trophy Ozaki stunned the Europeans with a dramatic 10-6 first-ever Asian victory.

In 2010 Ozaki guided his team through an extremely close match that was only decided on the eighteenth green of the last match on the final day of the continental series – with Sweden’s Henrik Stenson holding back Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee and converting a slippery six-foot winning putt for the Europeans. In January of 2011, the youngest of the three-brother Ozaki Japanese golf dynasty started the final day of singles at Black Mountain Golf Club in Thailand’s coastal town of Hua Hin with what seemed to be an insurmountable lead of 6-2. But a Colin Montgomerie captained European team would survive the eight singles matches without suffering a single defeat; winning six matches and registering one of team golf’s most remarkable victories in history – clinching the series by 9-7.
