“The Royal Trophy has grown into one of the world’s most important golf competitions and one of Asia’s most significant sporting events. It has set new records for Asian golf in terms of spectator attendance, global television broadcast coverage and generation of travel. Having, as its early visionary, the late legendary Seve Ballesteros, being the only competition in the world that unities Asia to compete as one, and featuring a monumental Match between the great Continents of Europe and Asia; the Royal Trophy is a most unique Championship,” stated the Royal Trophy Managing Director, Lincoln Venancio.

“We expect new records for attendance and travel to be set at the upcoming sixth edition of the Royal Trophy and we are very pleased to partner with the Radisson Hotel Brunei Darussalam in this connection. The visitors attending the Event will certainly have an unforgettable experience,” concluded Lincoln Venancio.

The inaugural five editions of the Royal Trophy delivered highly-competitive contests with Europe, led by the late five-time Major winner Seve Ballesteros, prevailing in the first two encounters; Asia securing a historic victory in the third Match under the captaincy of Naomichi ‘Joe’ Ozaki, and Colin Montgomerie leading the Europeans to the narrowest of victories in the fourth and fifth Tournaments.

In 2010 the Competition was decided on the final putt of the final hole in the final singles match. In the latest edition played at Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin, Thailand, the Europeans sealed a dramatic ‘recovery’ reversing a 6 to 2 deficit going into the final day, and miraculously winning six and halving two of the eight singles matches to retain stewardship of the Royal Trophy.

The sixth edition of the Royal Trophy, to be played at The Empire Hotel & Country Club on 14-16 December 2012, will be held as a Tribute to the late legendary Seve Ballesteros – the game’s great ambassador who epitomized the spirit of European competitiveness and passion in team golf and who led the Europeans to victory at the inaugural two editions of the Matches. The great Spaniard passed away in 2011 following a dramatic and inspiring battle against brain cancer.

The prestigious and highly-competitive team match-play Continental Championship will once again feature eight players and a captain representing Asia and Europe respectively in a series of sixteen foursomes, four-ball and singles matches.

Japanese superstar Ryo Ishikawa and Korean match-play maestro Kim Kyung-tae are the first two players selected by Japanese golfing giant and Asian Team Captain Naomichi ‘Joe’ Ozaki for the Asian challenge. Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie OBE, the only European golfer in history to remain undefeated in singles competition while wearing European colors, has been nominated by two-time Masters Champion and European Team Captain José Maria Olazábal as the first player for the Continent’s defense of the Trophy.

The hosting of the Royal Trophy in the Sultanate of Brunei offers golf fans a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the wonders of this majestic land set amidst the monumental Borneo rain forest and the pristine South China Sea.
