THE MINISTRY OF INDUSTRY AND PRIMARY RESOURCES PLEDGES FULL SUPPORT FOR BRUNEI’S HISTORIC HOSTING OF THE ROYAL TROPHY

The Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources of Brunei Darussalam has pledged their full support for the momentous first-ever hosting of the Royal Trophy – Europe vs Asia Golf Championship in the Sultanate of Brunei. The Ministry joins The Empire Hotel & Country Club, the Championship’s Host Venue, in this major National undertaking.

Since the commercial find of crude oil in Seria in 1929, oil and gas is the primary resource fuelling Brunei Darussalam’s economy, accounting for more than half of the nation’s GDP. Today the nation is on the move. While making efforts to sustain and strengthen the oil and gas industry, through the development of new upstream and downstream activities, the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam is driving for economic diversification, a move that will ensure a more sustainable economy spurred on by high technology, knowledge-based and capital-intensive industries.

The Royal Trophy is a unique, passionate and emotionally-charged series of matches played between the Continents of Asia and Europe. Featuring a total of sixteen foursomes, four-ball and singles encounters played over three days, the prestigious and highly-competitive team match-play Championship will once again showcase eight of Europe’s and Asia’s best golfers representing their respective Continents.

The sixth edition of this magnificent series of Matches will be hosted for the first time in the Sultanate of Brunei at the stunning Empire Hotel & Country Club on 14-16 December 2012. The Event promises to attract record galleries for Asian golf, deliver team golf of the highest quality and produce an electrifying sporting atmosphere as the two great Continents strive for stewardship of the Royal Trophy.

Golf tourism in Brunei is rapidly growing, particularly at The Empire Hotel & Country Club. The stunning Hotel property features a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course and has received the prestigious double honours of ‘Best Golf Resort in Asia Pacific in 2010 & 2011’ from Asian Golf Monthly at the Asia Pacific Golf Summit. The Sultanate of Brunei’s hosting of the Royal Trophy will certainly further strengthen the Kingdom’s position in the region as a major golf destination and subsequently attract greater numbers of discerning international tourists.

“We feel extremely honoured to have been selected to be the host venue for the sixth edition of this very prestigious tournament, it is indeed a dream come true for Brunei, for Brunei golf and for the Empire Hotel & Country Club, its owners and its staff. We are fully committed to do our utmost to take the Royal Trophy tournament to new heights, following its phenomenal success in Thailand in the preceding five years. This edition is especially significant, as the 2012 tournament is dedicated to the recognition and memory of its founder, the late legendary Seve Ballesteros. Brunei will be the first country to host the Royal Trophy outside of Thailand, and I am hopeful that the people of Brunei will come together to support this remarkable event and enjoy the excellent facilities at The Empire Hotel & Country Club,” said Desmond Acheson, General Manager of The Empire Hotel and Country Club.

The European Team will be led by two-time Masters Champion José Maria Olazábal while the Asians will be captained by the thirty-five time tournament title winner and Japanese golf legend Naomichi ‘Joe’ Ozaki.

Early nominations for the Asian Team include Japanese superstar Ryo Ishikawa – the youngest player in history to win a major Tour title, and Asia’s match-play maestro and former Asian Games double gold medalist K. T. Kim of Korea. Captain Olazábal has already nominated two of Europe’s greatest golfers – Colin Montgomerie OBE, an eight-time European Tour Order of Merit winner, and former Major Championship winner Paul Lawrie as his early appointments for the European Team.
