ISHIKAWA’S VICTORY IGNITES ASIA

Ryo Ishikawa’s victory at this past weekend’s Mitsui Sumitomo VISA Taiheiyo Masters in Shizuoka has provided a further confidence boost for Captain Naomichi ‘Joe’ Ozaki’s Asian Team.

“It is great to see Ryo Ishikawa playing very well and his victory at the Taiheiyo Club Gotemba Course definitely provides a confidence boost not only for him personally but for our entire Asian effort to win the Royal Trophy,” said the Japanese golfing giant Ozaki.

“Ryo Ishikawa’s success in Shizuoka this past weekend is clear confirmation that not only we will have a great selection of champions representing Asia at the Royal Trophy, but also that these are players that have been playing very well this year and that are actually coming into even better form as the dates for the Event approach,” added the winner of 35 career tournament titles.

“In the Japan Tour we had Ryo Ishikawa winning the tournament, also at the Mitsui Sumitomo VISA Taiheiyo Masters Yoshinori Fujimoto finished in third place and at the Barclays Singapore Open Y.E. Yang secured a top ten result. Our players are in top form and this is very encouraging,” concluded Ozaki, a two-time winner of the Japan Golf Tour Order of Merit.

Ryo Ishikawa is a member of the Asian Team for the Royal Trophy for the fourth consecutive time and was part of the continent’s historic victory against the Europeans in 2009. The twenty one year old is the youngest player to ever win a professional tournament title, the youngest to win a Tour Order of Merit and the only player in history to record a round of 58 in a major Tour event. The phenomenal Japanese star has added great impetus for the further growth of golf in Asia and a powerful boost for professional golf in his home nation of Japan.

“Captain Ozaki has constructed a very powerful team for this upcoming edition of the Royal Trophy. And it is also becoming more clear now that his players are coming into even better form as the dates for the Royal Trophy approach,” stated Lincoln Venancio, Managing Director of the Royal Trophy.

“The Mitsui Sumitomo VISA Taiheiyo Masters is a very important event in the Japan Golf Tour. Ryo Ishikawa’s win and Yoshinori Fujimoto’s third place finish are a show of strength for the Asian Team,” added Lincoln Venancio.

The sixth edition of the Royal Trophy will be held on 14-16 December at The Empire Hotel & Country Club’s magnificent Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course – located in the Sultanate of Brunei. Set amidst the world’s second largest rain forest and the pristine South China Sea – in the island of Borneo, The Empire Hotel & Country Club promises to be a fantastic Host Venue for the monumental competition which is expected to be televised in two hundred and fifty countries worldwide.

Captain Ozaki has currently nominated seven of the eight players responsible the Asian challenge for stewardship of the Royal Trophy – Ryo Ishikawa, Japan Golf Tour Championship winner Yoshinori Fujimoto, the first Asian to win a Major Y.E. Yang, 2010 Japan Golf Tour Order of Merit winner K.T. Kim, 2011 Japan Golf Tour Order of Merit winner Bae Sang-moon, the winner of twenty professional titles Jeev Milkha Singh and China’s top golfer Wu Ashun. In addition, former Asian Order of Merit winner Liang Wen-chong has been appointed as Asian Team Vice-Captain.

European Team Captain Jose Maria Olazabal, also high in confidence following a dramatic Ryder Cup victory in the United States, will attempt to defend the Trophy with three of his Ryder Cup heroes in Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts, Scotland’s Paul Lawrie and Italy’s Francesco Molinari – as well as the legendary Colin Montgomerie OBE. The Spaniard Olazabal still holds four more nominations for the European Team.
