The Royal Trophy’s most successful competitor, Henrik Stenson, has been selected for a fifth shoot-out with Asia’s finest golfers. Stenson has finished on the winning side in all four previous Royal Trophy appearances, and holed the winning putt in 2006 and 2010 – just as he did in his Ryder Cup debut.

And the super Swede could hardly be in better form following his hugely impressive triumph in the South Africa Open, the second oldest tournament on the golfing calendar. Stenson led from start to finish at the spectacular Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate to win by three shots.

There seemed to be little doubt he would capture the 13th victory of his career after he showed his class with opening rounds of 66-65 to break away from the chasing pack. And the successful week in South Africa will certainly boost Stenson’s confidence as he prepares to confront the Asian Team at the Royal Trophy.

The victory adds another important international title to Stenson’s collection with includes the US Players’ Championship – golf’s unofficial ‘Fifth Major’. He said: “You’ve just got to fight hard and put the work in. In this game you need to put a lot of effort in to get something back.”
