ITALIAN MOLINARI BROTHERS JOIN FORCES AT THE ROYAL TROPHY

José Maria Olazábal has decided that two Molinaris are better than one, by selecting Edoardo alongside younger brother Francesco for the European Team’s defense of the Royal Trophy against the Asian Continent.

The magnificent and historic series of Royal Trophy Matches will be played on 14-16 December at The Empire Hotel & Country Club in the Sultanate of Brunei.

Edoardo has made an excellent encouraging return to action in the past couple of months after undergoing wrist surgery in June.

And once the Italian star had proved his full fitness, Olazábal wasted no time in giving him the opportunity to renew his hugely successful partnership with Francesco, one of the first names on the European Captain’s Team list.

Edoardo and Francesco teamed up to give Italy a historic first victory at the traditional two-man World Cup of Golf in China in 2009, and the following year they also played together as Europe claimed a dramatic Ryder Cup triumph at Celtic Manor.

In the latest edition of the Ryder Cup played earlier this year at Medinah Country Club outside of Chicago, Francesco was the European talisman procuring the Continent’s victory against the Americans with a heroic tie against Tiger Woods in the final Singles match. The younger Molinari’s outstanding performance secured the unforgettable and emotional 14 ½ -13 ½ victory for the Europeans.

Olazábal led Europe to that victory after a record-breaking incredible final day fight back saw them overturn a 10-6 deficit for their sixth victory in the last eight Ryder Cups.

Olazábal commented: “Like Francesco, Edoardo belongs in the top bracket of European golfers. I am delighted that he is back to full health and that I can count on him and on this fantastic Italian pair for our defense of the Royal Trophy at The Empire.

“You only have to think back to the way Edoardo clinched his Ryder Cup debut to appreciate what a fine player he is when the pressure is on. He birdied the final three holes to win the final qualifying event and then be handed a wild card ahead of many other great European players.

“I have no doubt Edoardo and Francesco will play together in plenty more Ryder Cups, and it significantly strengthens my team to have them playing together at the Royal Trophy.

“Being brothers does not automatically guarantee you will have the necessary chemistry to combine well at foursomes and four-balls – but Edoardo and Francesco’s exploits at the World Cup and the Ryder Cup show they certainly have what it takes.

“No only they are brothers, but they play extremely well together, both are outstanding match play players in their own right and they have a passion in playing for Europe that is inspiring.

“I suppose Asian Team Captain Joe Ozaki will have no difficulty in predicting at least one of my Royal Trophy pairings!

“I know that while the nomination of Edoardo Molinari is great news for the European Team, the spectators and the television viewers; this is not great news for Captain Ozaki. I am sure that our Italian wild card pair will trouble him greatly as he considers his parings and strategy. But I have warned Captain Ozaki previously, we have won the Ryder Cup in America, we have won the past two editions of the Royal Trophy and we are coming to The Empire to defend the Royal Trophy. We are coming to win!”

In fact, the Molinaris’ success as a partnership dates back beyond their World Cup triumph. When Edoardo created golfing history as the first player from Continental Europe to win the US Amateur title in 2005, younger brother Franceso was his proud caddie!

Edoardo admitted he was delighted to receive the news of his Royal Trophy call-up.

He commented: “It is tremendous to join my brother Francesco to represent Europe at the Royal Trophy under the captaincy of José Maria Olazábal and in a tribute to Seve Ballesteros. It is extremely special.”

“Playing for Europe is immensely important to me. I will wear our continent’s colours with great pride, the utmost determination and unreserved commitment to win.”

“I will play my heart out to win the Royal Trophy for Europe and celebrate with Captain Olazábal and my European teammates, in a tribute to Seve Ballesteros. We very much want to win for him.”

The great series of sixteen matches commences on Friday 14 December at The Empire Hotel & Country Club with the foursomes matches.
