SPANISH ARMADA TO CHARGE FOR THE ROYAL TROPHY AT THE EMPIRE

Heroic European Royal Trophy and Ryder Cup Captain José Maria Olazábal will count with a powerful Spanish contingent for the defense of stewardship of the sixteen-kilogram solid-silver Royal Trophy at The Empire Hotel & Country Club on 14-16 December.

Olazábal has confirmed that he will take the role of Playing Captain, lead the Europeans in the team room and also compete on the golf course. He will enjoy the support of two other magnificent Spanish players in Miguel Angel Jimenez and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano.

Jimenez is certainly a player that has the potential to produce sleepless nights for Asian Team Captain Naomichi ‘Joe’ Ozaki. Not only the Malaga native is one of Europe’s most accomplished European golfers with 22 career tournament titles, victories in 19 European Tour events and previously being a runner-up at the US Open; the 49 year old is also in great form and overflowing in confidence following a sound victory at the 2012 Hong Kong Open played at the traditional and testing Hong Kong Golf Club only a few weeks ago.

Even more worrying for the Asian Team skipper Ozaki is that Jimenez is very comfortable playing in Asia and is in fact the most winning European Tour player in terms of tournaments played in this region. A former winner of the European PGA Championship and the European Masters, Jimenez is a master of team and match play golf having represented Spain in the World Cup of Golf an astonishing 13 times and having participated in six Ryder Cups.

Gonzalo-Castano is also producing some of the best golf of his career this year – having won the 2012 Italian Open – and is also very comfortable with Asian golf courses, with his victory at the 2011 Singapore Open being sound evidence.

Olazábal commented: “I am very pleased to have two fellow Spaniards in our Team for the defense of the Trophy.

“I am very comfortable with both Miguel and Gonzalo and they are both great champions. Miguel is extremely experienced and is the type of player I would want to have on my side when the pressure mounts and experience becomes paramount. His Ryder Cup and World Cup records speak for themselves.

“Gonzalo is playing very well and is a terrific competitor. He is capable of producing outstanding golf anywhere in the world and he has shown that by winning in Europe and winning in Asia numerous times.

“And beyond the fact that they are both outstanding players, I do believe that they will carry even greater passion in fighting for victory at this edition of the Royal Trophy because it is a tribute to Seve Ballesteros. Seve was a great friend and he meant a lot to all of us. We will play our hearts out for him and we will leave everything out on the golf course.”

The sixth edition of the Royal Trophy will be held on 14-16 December at The Empire Hotel & Country Club and promises to be the most impactful sporting event ever held in the Sultanate. The three days of matches will be televised to over 200 countries and territories worldwide including throughout Asia, Europe, Africa, the Americas and the Middle East.

The Royal Trophy will be immediately preceded by the 2012 Asia Pacific Golf Summit – an event firmly established as one of the world’s leading business gatherings for the golf industry.
