DOUBLE DRAMAS HEIGHTEN ANTICIPATION AT THE ROYAL TROPHY

The sixth edition of Royal Trophy has a lot to live up to this week, as the last two battles between the finest golfers from Asia and Europe have produced truly memorable climaxes.

It was hard to believe anything could top the edge-of-the-seat drama the two teams served up two years ago, when a tied match and a sudden death shoot-out looked a distinct possibility as the final singles match came down the 18th hole. Europe was leading 8-7 at that stage – but Thongchai Jaidee had just birdied the 17th to go one up in the decisive match against Henrik Stenson. But when Jaidee found trouble off the tee, Stenson, a battle-hardened Ryder Cup campaigner, had to hole a nerve-shredding seven footer to win the hole and claim the half point that would push his Team, over the finishing line. Sure enough, the ice-cool Swede rolled home that winning putt to give Europe an 8½ – 7½ victory that was tough for the heroic Asian players to take.
