The opening day of matches of the sixth edition of the Royal Trophy was uniquely scheduled into two separate sessions in respect of the 12:00noon to 2:00pm Friday prayer time.

The sixth edition of the Royal Trophy is being held at The Empire Hotel & Country Club and is played over three days with four foursomes matches being staged in the opening Friday, four four-ball encounters being held on the middle Saturday and the eight singles taking place on the final Sunday. Historically all matches commence generally at 11:00am and are played over eighteen holes continually, in accordance with the rules of the game of golf.

Continuous eighteen holes of play is also the general norm for the great majority of the tournaments and events throughout the world including all four Major Championships, the Ryder Cup, the four World Golf Championships, the Tour Championship and Players’ Championship played in the United States of America, the European Tour World Championship played in Dubai and the season opening events played in Abu Dhabi, Doha, Bahrain and Dubai.

However, in an innovative and unique manner, the opening four matches of the Royal Trophy were scheduled in two different sections in respect of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s titah. The matches commenced at 9:00am and only the front nine holes were played in the morning – reaching completion at about 11:00am. Matches recommenced at 2:05pm with play continuing from the 10th hole. The first session of the Royal Trophy reached completion at 4:40pm.

The Team Captains and Players, some of Europe’s and Asia’s most prominent professional golfers, faced a unique schedule and format of play but were fully supportive in respect of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s titah.

The response from the golfing stars attending the Royal Trophy on their experience at The Empire Hotel & Country Club and Brunei Darussalam has been extremely positive as the Captains and Players continue to enjoy the ultra-luxurious facilities of the 7-star Resort. Europe dominated the first day of play securing a 3 1/2 – 1/2 lead in the highly competitive continental team match play Championship. European Team Captain Jose Maria Olazabal’s experience and mastery of team golf was in full display as his European golfing battalion converted birdie after birdie – shocking the Asian Team into submission. The bright note of the day for the Asian Team came when Asia’s first Major Championship winner Y.E. Yang, partnering with Korean countryman K.T. Kim, secured a ½ point for the continent.
