Korean star H.S. Kim has been chosen to complete the strongest Asian Team yet assembled in readiness for the seventh edition of the Royal Trophy to be held at the Dragon Lake Golf Club in Guangzhou, China on 20-22 December 2013.

His selection is a reward for a wonderfully consistent run of results this year – he landed his second victory on the Japan Golf Tour and posted three runner-up finishes to charge to second place on the Order of Merit. If it had not been for the extraordinary performance of Hideko Matsuyama, who has become the first rookie to win the Japan Tour Order of Merit, the year-end ranking of Asia’s premier and richest professional Tour, Kim may well have finished top of the pile.

He held a big lead over third placed Shingo Katayama entering the final event of the season, the Golf Nippon Series JT Cup, and will no doubt be pleased to have the brilliant Matsuyama alongside him when they both make their Asian Team debuts at the Dragon Lake Golf Club.

Kim can also count on significant support from his countryman and namesake, K.T. Kim – the man who clinched a place in Royal Trophy folklore by securing Asia’s play-off victory in 2012 – and from Korea’s most famous golfer, Y.E. Yang.

Yang, who became the first Asian player to win a Major title by overcoming Tiger Woods in the 2009 USPGA Championship, will captain the continent for the first time in Guangzhou and it will be a big surprise if he does not send out the two Kims together.

In addition to Matsuyama, the Korean duo will also be joined at Asia’s premier and traditional team golf championship by two more Japanese superstars Ryo Ishikawa and 2012 Japan Tour Order of Merit winner Hiroyuki Fujita. And the formidable Asian Team line-up also features in-form Thailand aces Thongchai Jaidee and Kiradech Aphibarnrat, plus China’s top golfer, Liang Wen-chong.

So it is no wonder H.S. Kim greeted his selection by announcing he was supremely confident he could make it a winning debut. Kim commented: “To be nominated for the Asian Team for the Royal Trophy is fantastic. This is without any question the most important team golf event for Asia and to be part of such a great team constructed by Captain Y.E. Yang is phenomenal.
